June 14

5:00am- After a great nights sleep and an amazing solstice sunrise, we motored out of Gosport and headed back to Newburyport to beat the inclement weather predicted for early afternoon.  The winds were 10-15 from the south so we tried a close haul, but realized it would add a couple hours to the travel time to get back and since the weather forced the early departure, we decided to motor back once again.  The main and mizzen were left up.  Once outside the river at about 8:30, I put the engine in neutral and sailed on a beam reach into the river. We made it back to the mooring at 9:15 after bucking the ebbing current.  With the boat back on the mooring our first cruise onboard was over with no problems to report.

Weather = 63 degrees and sunny.  10-15 knot winds from the south-southwest.

Engine Hours = 4.5

Distance Traveled = 19nm

9:00am- Em, Eli, and I left the AYC under sunny skies and variable zephyrs. We motored out the river with the ebbing current to find there was no wind out on the ocean.  There was haze on the horizon and visibility was limited to three miles.  We turned northeast and motored four hours to Gosport Harbor and grabbed a PYC mooring off of Cedar Island.  Fifteen minutes after arriving in Gosport at 1:30pm, heavy fog rolled in and limited visibility to less than a mile.  We visited Star and Smuttynose Islands where I was divebombed on the latter by an angry seagull who left me a present and a lump on my head.

Weather = 78 degrees and sunny.  Light and variable winds from the south-southwest.

Engine Hours = 4.5

Distance Traveled = 19nm

11:00am- Andy and I left the mooring to head out for the first sail. We traveled with the current out the river against a 10 knot breeze.  Once out the river we sailed back and forth for 1.5hours trying different sail configurations.   1:00pm- We head back into the river which was ebbing at a brisk rate.  We had an east wind and ran in under jib and jigger with the engine in gear at 1400rpm.  The mouth of the river was confused with 3-5foot breaking waves traveling east to west and northeast to southwest.   We made it back to the yacht club at 1:45pm.  I checked the fuel filter and noticed the bottom of the glass reservoir had a large amount of contaminate.

Weather = 58 degrees with overcast, 10-20 knot east wind.

Engine hours= 2

Distance traveled = 10nm

8:00am- Andy and I launched the boat at Cashman Park in Newburyport, MA.  Motored 1/2 mile to Merri-Mar Yacht Basin to have the mast stepped.  11:00am motored to American Yacht Club.  No problems launching other than a seacock that needed to be be tightened.  The engine ran smooth up to 2000rpm.  After 2000rpm it seemed less balanced.  I did not exceed 2000rpm for more than ten seconds and plan on pushing the engine at a later date.

Weather = 85 degrees with sun, 15 knot east wind.

Engine hours = 1

Distance traveled = 2nm
